Senate panel to vote on Fauci contempt resolution after tense hearing

The Senate Judiciary Committee has endorsed Todd Blanche's nomination to become the next attorney general, paving the way for him to proceed to a full Senate vote. Blanche, currently serving as acting attorney general, secured the approval by a slim margin of 12-10. This decision came after Blanche fulfilled the demands of Sens.

John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., by confirming the termination of the contentious "anti-weaponization fund" in writing, despite their initial refusal to vote for him. Democrats on the committee expressed reservations, warning that the fund might be resurrected. All Democrats on the panel opposed his confirmation, while all Republicans backed him.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., called the document a "sham" and a "fraud on the Congress." However, Blanche still needs to achieve a total of 50 votes in the Senate to be confirmed. The path ahead is uncertain, as several Republican senators, including Lisa Murkowski, Bill Cassidy, and Susan Collins, have yet to make up their minds.

Blanche's confirmation requires a delicate balance, as he can only afford to lose a maximum of two Republican votes, given the Republican majority of 53-47 in the Senate, coupled with the ongoing medical leave of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
