SBU warns Ukrainians of new Russian recruitment tactics

Ukraine's Security Service, the SBU, has initiated a fresh nationwide awareness campaign to counter Russian efforts in recruiting Ukrainian citizens for criminal acts against the state, the agency's press office announced on August 4. The campaign's purpose is to educate Ukrainians about the tactics employed by adversaries to enlist individuals for activities such as arson, sabotage, terrorism, and other criminal deeds.

SBU officials explain that such recruitment typically starts with a seemingly innocuous post on social media platforms or messaging applications. They further note that Russian intelligence operatives may assume the personas of employers, volunteers, or law enforcement personnel to gain trust. In addition, these agents often utilize dating websites as a means to make initial contact with potential recruits.

The central message of the campaign highlights a stark warning from the SBU: "The FSB will take on any guise to transform you into a traitor." To support this initiative, the SBU has produced four educational videos that showcase the most prevalent schemes utilized by Russian intelligence to entice Ukrainians into becoming spies or perpetrators of criminal acts.

According to the SBU, a total of over 300 sabotage and terrorist incidents linked to Russia have been documented in 2026, of which 249 were successfully solved and 84 were thwarted before they materialized. The Security Service strongly advises citizens to be wary of suspicious communications from unknown parties, urging them to exercise particular caution when faced with promises of swift financial gain or requests to engage in dubious activities like passing along information, photographing specific locations, or procuring certain materials.

Anyone who encounters a potential recruitment attempt is encouraged to promptly report it to law enforcement by calling 1516 or through the agency's official Telegram bot, "Expose the FSB agent" (Spaly FSBshnyka). The SBU emphasizes that timely reporting of such attempts plays a crucial role in exposing Russian agents, preventing acts of sabotage, and safeguarding the well-being of Ukrainians.
