Samsung takes on Dolby Vision 2 with its new HDR format hitting Prime Video this month

Samsung has announced its new HDR format, HDR10+ Advanced, which will debut on Prime Video this month. This move puts Samsung ahead of Dolby Vision 2, which was announced months earlier. The new format offers six upgrades, including increased brightness, genre-specific picture tuning, improved local dimming for mini-LED sets, and better color accuracy.

Samsung's version of the format is called Intelligent Motion Smoothing, while Dolby Vision 2 uses Authentic Motion. Both formats aim to provide smarter, scene-by-scene motion smoothing for fast action without the "soap opera" look. The competition between Samsung and Dolby Vision 2 is part of a chaotic format war in the TV industry.

Other players like Hisense, Philips, and TCL have also committed to Dolby Vision 2, while LG is developing its own separate system. Samsung avoided Dolby's licensing fee, suggesting financial motivation behind the rush. Meanwhile, Google's Workspace update now allows users to easily locate specific moments in a video, streamlining the editing process.
