Samsung experience shows Apple’s timing for the iPhone Ultra couldn’t be better

Apple has waited an extensive period to release its inaugural foldable iPhone, with Samsung leading the market in the Galaxy Z Fold series. Although there were compelling reasons for Apple to wait, the latest Samsung experience suggests that the iPhone manufacturer's timing couldn't have been more favorable. Initially, Samsung was a strong advocate for foldable smartphones, but it soon realized the mistake of rushing into the market.

The first-generation Samsung Galaxy Fold's display proved highly susceptible to damage, leading the company to withdraw it from sale. Meanwhile, Apple patiently waited for display technology to advance to a point where it would be more durable and exhibit no visible crease when unfolded. Apple reportedly enlisted its own design engineers to assist Samsung in achieving this feat.

Previously, we noted that Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 may have a display display remarkably similar to the one slated for the iPhone Ultra. Samsung's sister site, 9to5Google, discovered that this display technology effectively concealed the crease in the center of the screen once unfolded. However, the significance of Samsung's improved display technology and increasing consumer demand cannot be understated.

According to 9to5Google, initial demand for the Fold 8 is thrice that of its predecessor. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is proving to be a resounding success for the company, with shipments now delayed amid demand that is reportedly 3 times higher than initial Fold 7 demand. This surge in demand may be linked to the creaseless display, but considering last year's growth, it's possible that foldables have been around long enough for more people to appreciate their benefits.

The iPhone Ultra, set to launch next month alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, is expected to capture around a 25% share of the total folding smartphones market.
