OpenAI: Cambodian scam centers used ChatGPT to lure Indian nationals, conduct investment fraud

ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's dedicated web browser for Mac, will cease functioning this weekend as the company transitions users to built-in browser tools within the new ChatGPT desktop app. The standalone Atlas browser is set to shut down on August 9, following a brief wind-down period. OpenAI warns that any agentic workflows within Atlas may no longer function after that date, as the browser will no longer receive security updates.

Users are advised to manually export their bookmarks as HTML files and save any important pages before the deadline. Cookies may also have export options, depending on the user's preferences. ChatGPT conversation history, however, remains unaffected and will continue to be accessible.

OpenAI strongly encourages users to transition to the new ChatGPT desktop app, which features a built-in browser supporting multiple tabs, downloads, website logins, autofill, password management, extensions, and persistent browser state. This new app is not a browser-first experience, though.

For users requiring an existing Chrome profile, signed-in session, open tabs, or other extensions, OpenAI recommends using the company's Chrome extension. Additionally, ChatGPT's desktop app includes a "computer use" functionality, allowing it to control Safari when granted permission.

While there are alternative AI browser options available for Mac users, including Comet, Dia, Opera Neon, and Aside, OpenAI is not the only company adopting a similar two-track approach. Anthropic, for instance, offers a sandboxed in-app browser with Claude Code, along with a Chrome extension that can work with existing logged-in sessions. Apple's latest AirTag 2, AirPods Pro 3, and Beats USB-A to USB-C Cable are also highlighted in the source material.
