Ollivant projected to win GOP primary in battleground Virginia district

Douglas Ollivant is set to secure the Republican nomination for Virginia's 7th Congressional District primary. He will then face off against Democratic incumbent Rep. Eugene Vindman in November. Ollivant boasts a prestigious background as a former White House National Security Council official, with a West Point education under his belt.

Vindman, too, has a noteworthy resume, serving as a lawyer on the National Security Council and garnering national attention during the 2019 impeachment of President Trump. The district, historically Democratic, is currently a battleground territory. Vindman narrowly defeated his Republican opponent in the 2024 primary by less than three points.

Vindman's campaign coffers are considerably larger, surpassing $12 million, while his Republican opponents have not even approached the $1 million mark. The district encompasses areas north of Richmond and parts of northern Virginia. In May, the Virginia Supreme Court struck down a proposed mid-decade redistricting change, which had been approved by voters in April.

The median household income in the district stands at $113,690, a figure surpassing the state average. Vindman, a retired U.S. Army officer, is focusing his campaign on issues such as rising living costs, stricter ethics in public officials, and support for service members and veterans, while contrasting with Mr. Trump's approach to the Iran war.

Ollivant has also targeted cost-of-living concerns, including energy prices and housing affordability, advocating for more and better jobs in the district.
