Kretinsky share sale hinders Staveley's West Ham bid

West Ham co-chair Daniel Kretinsky recently sold over 2% of his stake in the club to Czech businessman Jakub Havrlant, potentially disrupting Amanda Staveley's plans to invest in the team. Vanessa Gold, co-chair of West Ham and daughter of former co-owner David, revealed her family's intention to sell their shares to a consortium led by Staveley.

However, the transaction was contingent upon West Ham's pre-emption rights clause, which provided existing shareholders like Kretinsky with the option to match Staveley's offer. Kretinsky purchased a 27% stake in West Ham in 2021, but was unable to finalize his agreement with Gold due to allegations made against the club's majority shareholder, David Sullivan, in a BBC Panorama investigation.

Kretinsky has expressed his intention to consider his options following the Gold family's announcement. The sale to Havrlant is significant, as it enables Kretinsky to acquire Gold's 25.1% stake without surpassing the 50% ownership threshold, which would require him to make an offer for the remaining shares. While it is theoretically possible for Sullivan, who still owns 38.8% of the club, to put forth an offer for Gold's shares, it is unclear whether such an offer would be permissible given the nature of the allegations against Sullivan, which he has denied.

Kretinsky stated that the inclusion of Havrlant in the West Ham ownership group, pending the pre-emption process, is a welcome addition. Kretinsky highlighted Havrlant's exceptional experience as an investor and digital innovator, expressing confidence that his involvement will bolster the club.
