Kevin Gausman ‘Broke Down & He Cried’ After Blue Jays Trade

Kevin Gausman, the former Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher, reportedly "broke down and cried" after learning about his trade to the Chicago Cubs. The Blue Jays transferred Gausman to the Cubs ahead of the MLB trade deadline, exchanging him for two prospects. This marked the end of Gausman's 4.5-year tenure in Toronto. Gausman had vehemently opposed the trade, yet the Blue Jays moved him due to their below .500 record and his expiring contract.

According to former Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Daulton Varsho, who was also traded at the deadline, Gausman and his teammates were emotionally distraught. Varsho confirmed that Gausman cried during the trade, alongside Varsho and George Springer, who remained with the team. The Blue Jays' recent World Series victory and the strong bond between players made the trade particularly heart-wrenching for Gausman, who was the team's ace for nearly five years.

The pitcher signed a five-year, $110 million deal with the Blue Jays ahead of the 2022 season, becoming one of the best free-agent signings in franchise history. Despite the trade, Gausman will have the opportunity to re-sign with the Blue Jays as a free agent at the end of the season, allowing him to choose where he wants to play.
