Kerala rains: Kozhikode police issue alert over landslides, flooding and dam releases

Kerala's Kozhikode city has issued an alert as heavy rains have led to concerns over landslides, flooding, and dam releases. A special police team, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Padam Singh, has been deployed for increased surveillance in vulnerable areas. The city police chief, A.P. Shoukathali, is coordinating with various departments including Fire and Rescue Services, Revenue, District Disaster Management Authority, Health, local self-government bodies, Kerala State Electricity Board, and National Disaster Response Force.

Police patrols have been intensified in low-lying areas, riverbanks, waterlogged roads, bridges, beaches, tourist spots, and landslide-prone regions. The public is strongly cautioned against entering hazardous zones and is advised to follow safety guidelines strictly. Driving through flooded roads or swiftly flowing rivers is prohibited, as is visiting beaches or climbing rocks.

Fishers are asked to monitor weather updates and avoid going to sea. Residents in landslide-prone or riverbank areas must stay vigilant for warning signs and evacuate to safer locations immediately. Electrical hazards should be reported to KSEB. The police control room is operational to manage response operations, with emergency vehicles and specialized rescue equipment available at key locations.

Strict legal action will be taken against those spreading misinformation. The public is urged to rely on verified information from government sources, district authorities, police, and the India Meteorological Department. Emergency situations can be reported to the nearest police station or the Kerala Police emergency number, 112.

Shoukathali urges the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency services for effective disaster management.
