Iran retains grip on Hormuz as talks advance toward deal to prevent war

Recent diplomatic talks between Iran and Oman aim to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, potentially within hours, according to diplomatic signals and reports. The dispute over the strait's operation was a key factor leading to the collapse of a June memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.

While the emerging agreement remains unclear, The New York Times reports it could preserve or strengthen Iran's control over the waterway. The talks come amid threats from President Donald Trump to resume military action against Iran, though the administration appears to prefer diplomatic solutions. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed an agreement could be reached imminently, though Tehran denied the claim.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism, stating progress had been made in talks between Iran and Oman. Saudi outlet Al-Hadath cited an unnamed source claiming arrangements for the full reopening could be announced within hours or the following day. Qatar is also involved in the mediation, exchanging draft proposals described as being at a "very advanced stage."

The immediate goal is a short-term solution to allow both Washington and Tehran to return to broader negotiations. Iran claims ownership over Hormuz and demands ships pay transit fees, a demand that has driven oil prices higher and increased pressure on Trump to halt the war. Iran now seeks to collect "service fees" on passing vessels, with revenue to be divided equally between Iran and Oman.

Iran insists on maintaining influence over the outbound lane, despite opposition from the United States, which fears creating a dangerous precedent for other countries.
