Gov’t should have shared constitutional reform position with review committee – Prof Kwasi Prempeh

Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, the Chair of the 2025 Constitution Review Committee, has expressed his belief that the government should have shared its stance on constitutional reforms with the committee. In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Prempeh argued that this would have provided crucial context for the committee as it carried out its mandate of reviewing the 1992 Constitution and conducting nationwide consultations.

He noted that sharing the government's input would have allowed the committee to start its work earlier, avoiding delays that have now occurred, and clarified its expectations and priorities for the reform process. Doing so would not have undermined the committee's independence but rather helped shape its work from the outset. Prempeh emphasized the importance of keeping the constitutional review process free from partisan interests, urging political leaders to approach the review with patriotism.

He argued that the Constitution is intended to serve future generations rather than the interests of any particular government or political party, and cautioned against rushing amendments, stressing that extensive public consultation and deliberation are essential for producing legitimate and enduring reforms.
