Filipina Eala lives up to the hype with Washington triumph

Alexandra Eala made history on Monday by winning the Washington Open, becoming the first Filipina to claim a tour-level singles championship. The 21-year-old from the Philippines demonstrated her mettle by defeating top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a rain-disrupted final that commenced on Sunday. Eala thrashed Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, last year's champion Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina, and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka en route to her maiden victory on the WTA Tour.

She acknowledged the immense pressure and expectation surrounding her, stating, "At the beginning of the week, there's no way I'd have thought that I'd be holding this trophy. These moments creep up on you, and I hold them close to my heart."
