Ex-Liberian President George Weah to deliver lecture at 2026 NBA conference

Former Liberian President George Weah will deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. NBA’s Chairman of the planning committee, Abdul Muhammed, SAN, announced the choice of speaker on Tuesday via the NBA’s X handle. Weah’s selection underscores the NBA’s dedication to “elevate the quality of discourse and to deepen conversations on the issues to be explored in the context of this year’s theme: Beyond Limits.”

Weah, who led Liberia from 2018 to 2024, holds degrees in Business Administration and Public Administration from DeVry University, Miami, Florida, USA. The multi-talented individual became the first African footballer to win the Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player of the Year Award, and African Footballer of the Year Award in 1995. Prior to his political career, Weah served as UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador from 1997.

He was also awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award by ESPN in 2004 for his efforts to aid children affected by conflict, disease, and poverty. Honoured with three honorary Doctorates of Humane Letters by AME Zion University, Cuttington University, and the University of Liberia, Weah has demonstrated his commitment to sports, humanity, peace-building, education, and good governance.

Following his resignation from the presidency in 2024, Weah continues to inspire youths worldwide as a politician and sportsman. Muhammed emphasized the relevance of the NBA conference amid the approaching 2027 general elections, a crucial juncture for Nigeria’s economic and political evolution. Last year’s NBA conference in Enugu State featured South African opposition leader Julius Malema as the keynote speaker on the theme ‘Stand Out, Stand Tall.’
