Europe's heatwave isn't cooling Asian travelers' holiday plans for the continent

Europe has been gripped by a heatwave this summer, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in various parts of the continent. Despite this, Asian travelers continue to flock to the continent, showing little impact from the extreme heat on their holiday plans. Edmund Ong, a senior regional director at Trip.com, noted a 57% year-on-year increase in searches for European destinations by Asian travelers during the July-August travel season, coupled with improved conversion rates.

The most popular destinations remained France, Italy, and Spain. Northern Europe saw a significant rise in hotel bookings, with a doubling of bookings compared to the previous year. This suggests travelers are allocating more of their European itineraries to Northern Europe, which offers cooler climates. Despite the heat, luxury travel agency Lightfoot Travel reported continued interest in Southern Europe, particularly Italy and Greece, as well as Scandinavia.

Travel specialists from various agencies noted a growing trend among affluent travelers who seek cooler climates in Northern Europe. The trend is most pronounced among travelers from Singapore and Hong Kong, who begin their holiday searches by looking for "somewhere cooler." Spending data also indicates resilient demand for Northern Europe, with outbound travel spending to Norway forecast to rise by 8% among Chinese travelers and 4% among Singaporean travelers in 2026.

Airlines also report healthy demand for European routes, with Singapore Airlines noting an 85.5% passenger load factor on European routes in June, slightly lower than their overall passenger load factor of 86.4%.
