EU backs Spain after Ceuta migration crisis while ministers push for tougher anti-smuggling measures

European Union interior ministers supported Spain in the wake of a recent migration crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish North African enclave. Around 72,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta over several days, resulting in an estimated 75 deaths. EU ministers agreed that the bloc must enhance efforts against migrant smuggling networks, improve coordination at borders, and collaborate more closely with non-EU nations to stave off similar incidents.

The emergency meeting aimed to ease tensions stemming from previous criticism of Spain's migration policies, with 22 EU leaders calling for stricter actions. Spanish Commissioner Magnus Brunner called the influx a tool used by organized crime groups, which spread disinformation via social media. Following the talks, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned attempts to exploit the crisis for political gain.

Spain's handling of the situation and the swift decline in migrant numbers led to a more conciliatory tone from other countries. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska welcomed the meeting's outcome, stating that the Schengen area was not threatened due to Ceuta's unique border regime. Despite the crisis, Spain maintained its strong partnership with Morocco in controlling migration.

EU ministers called for improved intelligence-sharing, early-warning systems, and enhanced cooperation with non-EU countries to strengthen external borders.
