The United States Cancels Brazilian Ambassador's Visa Amidst Diplomatic Tensions

The United States has revoked the visa of Brazil's ambassador to Washington, Maria Luiza Viotti, in response to delays in granting diplomatic credentials to a designated U.S. ambassador in Brasilia. Washington accuses Brazil of withholding formal diplomatic approval for the designated U.S. ambassador and denies visas to several U.S. diplomats, according to a senior State Department official.

The official said the visa will be reinstated if the situation is resolved, according to a senior State Department official. Other U.S. officials reported the measure had been delayed to allow Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva time to reverse course. Washington complains that Lula's government rejected visas for two U.S. diplomats seeking to visit Brazil before the upcoming presidential elections, scheduled for next October.

U.S. officials explain that Ribeiro Viotti can return to her official duties if the Brazilian government accepts the appointment of Danny Pérez, the former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, as the U.S. ambassador to Brazil. U.S. authorities believe the situation will not normalize until after the upcoming legislative and presidential elections in the Latin American country.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries are at a low point. The two American leaders are on opposite ideological ends. The Trump Administration has gradually hardened its rhetoric against Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Two weeks ago, it imposed a tariff of up to 37.5% on a wide range of Brazilian products, alleging that Lula was "negotiating in bad faith."
