Spain may face reproach in Brussels for Europe's reaction to the Ceuta crisis. While the migrants might not have viewed the situation the same way last weekend, it is no overstatement to say that migration policy is the most contentious issue in the EU today, with the far-right and even the Scandinavian center-left joining the wave, which has little to do with the values Europe claims to defend.

Spain stands out as an exception, implementing regularization for hundreds of thousands of migrants and open policies that explain a GDP advancement well above European averages. However, over 60,000 irregular migrants crossed Spanish borders - which are Europe's borders - in just a few hours, causing a first-class crisis and reaffirming Spain's isolation in this highly controversial agenda.

Over 22 countries, led by populist Italian Giorgia Meloni and Danish social democrat Mette Frederiksen, strongly criticized Spain over the Ceuta avalanche, mixing alternative facts with amnesia of European values. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's frosty reaction fueled the attacks, but on Monday - as the crisis neared resolution - the German softened her tone and adopted a more conciliatory stance.

While Spain resolved the bulk of the problem in 48 hours despite the errors, this Tuesday sees its moment: according to consulted sources, Spain will claim solidarity from partners and terrify the toughest the "selfish, polarizing and illegal" reaction, driven by "prejudices, fake news, ignorance or political interest."
