Eala powers past Pegula for first WTA title in Washington

Alexandra Eala triumphed over top-seeded Jessica Pegula to claim the first WTA title of her career at the Washington Open. The 21-year-old left-hander defeated Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a thrilling match that spanned two days due to lengthy weather delays. Eala, ranked 28th, showcased her resilience with a dominant service performance and an impressive array of winners, breaking Pegula's serve to clinch the second set and force a decisive third.

The final set was dominated by Eala, who savored the victory after a series of intense challenges, including defeats at the hands of Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, second-seeded Elina Svitolina, third-seeded Naomi Osaka, and defending champion Leylah Fernandez. The win catapults Eala to a career-high ranking of 20th in the world.

Pegula, the third-ranked player, expressed her admiration for Eala's ability to handle the spotlight and maturity as a player and person. Both athletes will compete in the WTA 1000 hard court event in Toronto.
