Don’t use ‘funny tricks’ to undermine government’s diesel relief – Dr Tutu-Boahene

Lecturer Dr Bernard Tutu-Boahene, a Political Marketing expert at the University of Education, Winneba, has cautioned commercial drivers, market women, and producers to avoid using "funny tricks" to undermine the benefits of the government's decision to reduce diesel prices. This move came after President John Mahama directed the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to absorb GH¢2 from every litre of diesel to alleviate the impact of rising fuel costs on Ghanaians.

Dr Tutu-Boahene welcomed the government's intervention, stating it aims to ease the cost-of-living pressures on transport operators and businesses reliant on diesel. He highlighted that the transport sector significantly influences the cost of goods and services, and reducing fuel prices could help control food inflation and enhance living standards.

However, he expressed concern that some individuals in these sectors might exploit the relief measures for personal gain, potentially maintaining high fares despite reduced fuel costs. Dr Tutu-Boahene warned that authorities had previously arrested drivers for similar actions and called for continued monitoring to prevent undermining the government's intentions.

He also urged market women to consider the broader economic impact of their pricing decisions, especially if transport fares remain unchanged. Producers using diesel-powered equipment, such as generators and plants, were advised to factor the reduction in fuel costs into their production decisions. Dr Tutu-Boahene emphasized that responsible behavior from all sectors is crucial for government interventions to achieve their intended purpose, urging a collective effort to ensure the benefits reach consumers.
