Dolphins QB Quinn Ewers' Goal is to Earn Starting Job

The Miami Dolphins have inked a three-year, $67 million contract with Malik Willis in an effort to secure their quarterback position for the upcoming season. This move comes after the release of Tua Tagovailoa, and suggests the front office's confidence in Willis as a capable starting quarterback. As a result, seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers, who was drafted by the Texas Longhorns in 2025, will be vying for the second-string quarterback role.

Ewers, who went 1-2 as a starter last season with 622 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, remains determined to compete for the starting job in Miami. However, he acknowledges that the team's priority might be to have Willis as the starting quarterback. "In the quarterback room, the respective goal is to be playing on Sundays," Ewers stated in an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

"We all want to be playing, but at the end of the day, I think we all want what's best for the Dolphins. So, we're all competing for the same spot, but we're all competing for the same goal. Whoever's out there, no matter who it is, anybody’s going to get the support."

Born as one of the highest-rated recruits before transferring to Ohio State in 2021 and then to Texas, Ewers earned All-SEC honors in 2024. Despite leading Texas to the College Football Playoff semifinal during that season, his draft stock dropped and he was taken in the final round. While Ewers is focused on proving himself in Miami, he is supportive of Willis.

"I was excited to get to work with him, honestly," Ewers commented on Willis. "I think he had a great end of the year last year with Green Bay, and to get a guy like that who has played good in some big-time games is only going to help me in the long run."

In essence, Ewers is competing for the second-string quarterback position in Miami while supporting Willis, who may serve as a blueprint for aspiring starting quarterbacks in the league. Willis, drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2022 and traded to the Dolphins in 2024, has shown his worth by providing a strong performance when Jordan Love was injured.
