Connecting founders across Southeast Asia used to be an easy part of a job, but it has now become the whole job. The founder-to-investor, company-to-partner, and room-of-useful-people dynamics are crucial for scaling and changing economies. The network of trust is what holds these connections together, and building that network is the actual work.

In the past, being the connector meant being trusted by both sides simultaneously, but this trust is becoming harder to hold. The signal is small and social, with people questioning alignment and the motives behind introductions. The narrowing of the middle ground, brought on by reduced venture funding and the focus on local capital, creates a challenge for connectors.

Capital and technology are sorting into blocs, causing capital to move by alignment rather than just returns. Southeast Asian venture funding fell sharply in 2025, with Singapore taking around 92 percent of the region's startup funding in the first half of the year. Countries like Malaysia are investing in artificial intelligence and setting up their own data and model training infrastructure.

When capital and technology become divided, connectors who stand in the neutral middle have less stable ground. Adapting by picking a lane or insisting on total neutrality is weak. The new connector must offer trust that survives suspicion, which comes from having a clear position and being consistent enough that both sides believe in the connector's integrity.

This change in the craft is necessary, as a community builder or partnerships lead can no longer be a switchboard. The role is being rebuilt, with the most valuable connectors being those who stand for a view about where the region is going and build a network that holds up under pressure.
