'Coherent to describe Zionism as racist': UK tribunal upholds protection for anti-Zionist beliefs

The UK Appeals Tribunal has affirmed that it is logical to label Zionism as a racist ideology due to its promotion of a state exclusively for the Jewish race in a region previously inhabited by another race, the Palestinians. This perspective is further reinforced by the ability to characterize Zionism as "colonial and imperialistic."

The Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) made this decision in a judgment released on Tuesday, upholding an earlier employment tribunal's ruling that the University of Bristol had unlawfully discriminated against Professor David Miller by terminating his employment due to his anti-Zionist opinions. The initial tribunal had found in 2024 that Miller's dismissal was a case of unlawful direct discrimination, and his views on Zionism were deemed a protected philosophical belief.

However, the EAT dismissed the university's appeal, stating that the lower tribunal had not made any errors in its conclusions regarding liability, including its decision that Miller's beliefs about Zionism were indeed protected.
