Cataluña otea el final del túnel tras la aplicación de la amnistía a casi una veintena de encausados

Catalonia's leader Salvador Illa declared on Friday, as the year-end approached, that the amnesty law seems to be taking effect after the European Court of Justice (EUJU) ruled it was not against community law. Illa stated, "I have defended since the first day that it is applied agilely and efficiently. And I am pleased that some individuals have benefited."

The Catalan Executive has long advocated for the implementation of the rule to restore political normalcy after a long and protracted decade of the proce. With the drip-feed of 18 amnestied cases so far, Catalonia now seems to be nearing the end of the tunnel, which will culminate in the return of Carles Puigdemont.

The partial pardon extended to Laura Borràs and the Budgets aligns with the release of the partial pardon by the Government to Laura Borràs, the former president of Parliament, who was sentenced to four years in prison and 13 years of disqualification for circumventing contracts. This pardon involved reducing her prison sentence to two years, preventing her from serving time.

The Executive cited the advice of the Higher Court of Justice of Catalonia, which deemed its own sentence excessive. Junts and Borràs herself argue that the sentence, not amnestiable, always had a clear political component. The People's Party (PP) did not take long to consider the pardon as a first installment for potential support of Junts in the 2027 budgets.

Pedro Sánchez affirmed that the partial pardon "has nothing to do with budgets and with political negotiation." Borràs herself declared in the red that her rejection of the accounts is unmovable.
