Buffon questions Italy’s Conte snub and claims: ‘For Guardiola they could have gone further’

Former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has offered his measured opinion on the recent turmoil in the Italian national team, refraining from speculating on whether the team missed an opportunity. The Azzurri have been embroiled in controversy, with coach Antonio Conte not being seriously considered for the role and managers like Maurizio Sarri and Carlo Ancelotti leaving. Buffon, who served as an Azzurri delegation chief, reflected on a turbulent period that saw him contemplate his own future as well.

Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, who were brought in to replace the departing officials, tried to dissuade Buffon from stepping away from his role, but he held firm to his decision. Buffon expressed gratitude for their support and that of the federation president, Giovanni Malagò. When asked if Italian football had missed a chance with Guardiola's rejection, Mancini's departure, and the exit of Maldini and Leonardo, Buffon remained measured.

"I don't know if an opportunity was lost – it depends on the objective, so no one will ever know," he stated. He highlighted that the decision to not consider Conte as a top contender was likely influenced by budget constraints. However, he believed that for Guardiola, the situation could have been more favorable, given the resources at their disposal.

Turning to the ongoing searches for new goalkeepers, Buffon endorsed Guglielmo Vicario, citing his experience with the national team, a Europa League title with Tottenham, and a significant stint in the Premier League. He offered diplomatic comments regarding Zion Suzuki, acknowledging the age difference and other factors but declining to make any public statements about his future.
