Bono, Eddie Vedder among mourners at the funeral of Glen Hansard

Hundreds of mourners, including renowned Irish musicians and actors, gathered at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin for the funeral of Glen Hansard on Tuesday. The 56-year-old Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter had passed away in a motorcycle accident the previous week. Among the congregation were actors Steve Coogan and Chris O’Dowd, as well as fellow musicians Bono, Hozier, Declan O’Rourke, and Imelda May.

Outside the cathedral, a large crowd watched the proceedings on big screens while pallbearers carried the wicker coffin, adorned with flowers, into the church.

The funeral mass was infused with music, with Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam singing Hansard’s "The Song of Good Hope" alongside his longtime musical partner, Markéta Irglová. Bono paid tribute to Hansard, stating that "everyone who met him remembered the day they met him." He played a recorded message from poet Patti Smith, who performed a lullaby for Hansard's family and friends, and recited lyrics from U2’s "Beautiful Day."

Hansard's widow, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, thanked the police officers who responded to the accident scene before delivering a poem she had penned for her late husband. Hansard, the front man of the Irish rock band The Frames, gained fame for his role in the 1991 film "The Commitments" and for winning an Oscar in 2008 for the song "Falling Slowly" from the movie "Once," co-starring Irglová.
