Atlanta ‘96 gold felt like World Cup — Lawal

Garba Lawal, a member of Nigeria's 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning football team, has shared his thoughts on the team's historic victory with The PUNCH Sports Extra. The 52-year-old highlighted the Dream Team's triumph in Atlanta as the closest experience to winning the World Cup, describing it as the pinnacle of his football career. He firmly stated that the achievement cannot be compared to anything else Nigeria's football has produced.

Nigeria's golden generation of players, active between 1994 and 1998, could compete with any team globally. They reached the World Cup in both instances but fell short in the knockout stage each time. However, the Olympic Eagles secured football gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, a feat Lawal views as more significant than a World Cup run could have delivered.

Lawal emphasized that it was special because Nigeria was the first African country to achieve this feat before Cameroon followed in 2000. He pointed out that nobody gave Nigeria a chance to win that football event. When considering the quality of opponents faced, such as Brazil's Bebeto, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Juninho, and Argentina's Simeone, Zanetti, Crespo, and Ortega, Lawal acknowledged their caliber. He attributed the team's success to belief and luck, stating that they did their best and were fortunate.

As for celebrating the achievement, Lawal revealed that the team's primary instinct was to return home after a lengthy camping period that began in Enugu. The journey took them through Dallas and Florida before reaching Atlanta. He downplayed the idea of a wild celebration, mentioning that most players were eager to join their new clubs upon returning home. For Lawal and his teammates, the gold medal remains their proudest memory.
