30 years after Atlanta gold, I’m yet to be rewarded – Bonfrère Jo

Thirty years after steering Nigeria to its first-ever Olympic football gold medal, former Dream Team coach Johannes "Bonfrère" Jo lamented that the Nigerian government has yet to recognize or reward his pivotal role in one of the nation's most significant sporting achievements, according to The PUNCH. Bonfrère led a star-studded squad that included Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, Daniel Amokachi, Taribo West, Celestine Babayaro, Garba Lawal, and Emmanuel Amuneke to an Olympic gold in the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Nigeria toppled Brazil 4-3 in the semi-finals and staged a remarkable comeback to beat Argentina 3-2 in the final, thus becoming the first African nation to claim an Olympic football title. While many members of the victorious team were celebrated with national honors, cash incentives, and residences, Bonfrère feels his contribution has largely been overlooked.

The 80-year-old Dutch coach also disclosed that his Olympic gold medal was stolen, claiming it was taken while in the custody of a team official. This incident remains one of the most heart-wrenching memories of his association with Nigerian football, compounded by the absence of any government recognition or reward. Despite repeated attempts to seek acknowledgment from relevant authorities, Bonfrère has received little to no response.

He expressed his willingness to be satisfied with any form of recognition from the government or the relevant bodies. As Nigeria continues to honor the players and officials who achieved this historic feat in Atlanta 1996, Bonfrère hopes that this milestone will also shed light on the unrecognized contributions of those who made it possible.
