Volvo’s purported EX50 could be the budget-friendly plot twist nobody saw coming

Volvo is reportedly developing a budget-friendly compact electric crossover called the EX50. The vehicle is expected to replace the outdated EX40 in the US market by 2027, and could be priced around $40,000, making it significantly more affordable than the current EX40 starting at $56,545. The EX50 is rumored to be larger than its predecessor, both in height and length, a feature American consumers have consistently valued.

It will share its SPA3 underpinnings with the upcoming EX60, Volvo's next step up in the electric lineup. The EX50 is set to begin production in spring 2027 at Volvo's new factory in Kosice, Slovakia, a facility built for up to 250,000 vehicles annually, with an estimated production capacity of 90,000 units for the EX50. Volvo's move to produce the EX50 comes amid a shift in resources from its sister brand, Polestar.

Due to trade rule restrictions, Polestar is blocked from selling its models in the US starting in 2027, including the planned Polestar 7 crossover. Some design work previously reserved for the Polestar 7 is reportedly being integrated into the EX50, showcasing Volvo's strategic consolidation of engineering resources across its brands.

Meanwhile, General Motors is introducing a standard charging port across all its electric vehicles for the 2027 model year, facilitating easier access to compatible Tesla Superchargers and other fast-charging networks. Meanwhile, Lamborghini has unveiled its new Revuelto SV, a supercar focused on enhancing driving enjoyment on twisty roads, limited to 1,963 units.

Ferrari, on the other hand, revealed a one-off supercar, the CZ26, built exclusively for a single client, a custom creation that took two years to finalize.
