“These are not normal times; let’s all sacrifice” – Energy Ministry appeals to GPRTU over fare hikes

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has called on commercial transport operators to pause plans for fare increases, following the government's intervention to lower diesel prices by GH¢2 per litre. Richmond Rockson, the Ministry's spokesperson, acknowledged the GPRTU's and consumers' concerns about the rising fuel costs, but maintained that the current global energy crisis demands collective sacrifice.

The government's decision to reduce diesel prices was intended to alleviate the financial burden on both consumers and commercial drivers, who have been grappling with escalating fuel costs. Rockson stressed that while the price reduction might not fully address the transport sector's challenges, it would offer significant relief.

He urged stakeholders to keep a close eye on the international petroleum market, as global geopolitical events continue to affect fuel prices in Ghana. The Ministry's comments come amid ongoing demands from transport operators for fare adjustments, citing the impact of rising fuel prices on their businesses.
