The Steam Frame Might End Up More Expensive Than the Steam Machine

The Steam Frame, a mini gaming PC from Valve, may end up costing more than the Steam Machine itself. According to a deleted stream by Valve leaker Tyler McVicker, the headset could have a price tag of $1100 or higher. This cost is largely due to the ongoing RAM crisis, which has affected the Steam Frame's specifications. The device will feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC with 16GB of memory and 256GB or 1TB of UFS storage.

Despite being a relatively old processor, it still boasts impressive capabilities. The headset is also equipped with two 2160x2160 LCD displays, each with a 144Hz refresh rate, and six cameras tracking head and eye movements. Additionally, Valve has incorporated a wireless transmission system capable of dynamically rendering games based on the player's focus.

While the Steam Frame may struggle to run games locally, the added complexity of hardware, displays, and cameras will likely contribute to its higher price. Valve's Index, released in 2019, already commanded a price of $999, suggesting that the Steam Frame could potentially be even more expensive. Until Valve officially announces the Steam Frame's price, the cost remains uncertain.

Valve previously announced that the headset would launch around the same time as the Steam Controller, which went live on May 4. If this pattern holds true, the Steam Frame might be unveiled as early as August 10.
