Stop harassing opposition, Ghana is bigger than any party – Minority to gov’t

The Minority in Ghana's Parliament has accused the government of using state institutions to harass and intimidate members of the opposition, warning that such actions threaten the nation's democratic governance. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin spoke during the conclusion of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament's Second Meeting, urging the government to cease the persecution of political opponents. He stated, "We say to the NDC government: stop the harassment of the opposition."

Afenyo-Markin expressed concern that the misuse of investigative and prosecutorial powers against opposition figures undermines democratic principles and erodes public trust in state institutions. He alleged that New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, including minority MPs, have been maliciously targeted for expressing dissenting views, stating, "Members of the New Patriotic Party, including Minority MPs, have been maliciously targeted and harassed simply for holding different views."

The Minority Leader argued that a government that silences its critics demonstrates intolerance and intolerance is dangerous. He warned that such actions create a culture of silence, where citizens and political opponents may fear voicing their opinions. Afenyo-Markin also questioned recent judicial decisions, alleging they reflect unequal treatment under the law, suggesting there are two sets of justice - one for the government's allies and another for its opponents.

He stressed that Ghana's democracy relies on the opposition's ability to express views freely. The Minority Leader concluded, "Ghana is bigger than any one party, and our democracy only works if the opposition can speak."
