‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Tops ‘Avengers: Endgame’ For Biggest Box Office Debut Ever

Sony Pictures announced that Spider-Man: Brand New Day surpassed the box office record previously held by Avengers: Endgame. The fourth installment starring Tom Holland earned US$360 million (S$461.7 million) in ticket sales during its opening weekend in US and Canadian theaters. This marks the highest North American opening weekend for a movie, beating the previous record of US$357 million set by Avengers: Endgame.

Sony projected Spider-Man would net an estimated US$355 million in its first weekend, just slightly below the previous record. However, the film managed to surpass it due to a stronger-than-expected Sunday performance. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in the achievement. Prior to Avengers: Endgame, no film had opened over US$300 million domestically, with Avengers: Infinity War ($257 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247 million) being the previous record holders.

The third Spider-Man film, No Way Home, released in December 2021, also contributed to the record-breaking weekend, earning a US$260 million debut and ultimately reaching US$1.9 billion globally.
