Russia says seven killed and 40 injured by Ukrainian drone hitting busy beach

A drone strike on a popular beach in southern Russia on Sunday claimed the lives of seven people, including three children, and left 40 others injured, local authorities reported. The crash site, situated near the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka on the Black Sea, was identified as a bustling tourist destination, drawing Russians due to its favorable climate and well-developed infrastructure, especially as international travel has been limited by sanctions.

According to a social media video authenticated by the BBC, the drone was observed soaring towards a cliff face before exploding into a massive fireball on the shore. The governor of the Krasnodar region, Veniamin Kondratyev, alleged that Ukraine carried out "a deliberate strike on civilians." Ukraine has yet to comment on the incident.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians on purpose, though some eyewitnesses have given accounts suggesting gunfire preceded the explosion, hinting at the possibility that air defenses attempted to intercept the drone. Russian media cited several eyewitnesses who reported hearing machine gun fire just before the blast.

Residents and tourists on the scene recounted their experiences. One holidaymaker said they merely covered themselves with their sun loungers and did not witness the exact moment of the explosion. Another individual claimed to have heard "gunfire, like a machine gun" followed by the explosion, even though they did not see the drone's impact.

The governor reported that 17 people were hospitalized due to the attack. Local eyewitnesses emphasized that there was no warning siren prior to the drone attack. One holidaymaker expressed concern over their child's emotional state following the incident, stating that their child was experiencing a nervous breakdown.
