‘Proud of our contingent’: PM Modi hails India's performance at Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride in India's performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, congratulating the athletes on their achievements. In a post on X, he stated that India had won 39 medals, including 13 gold, and lauded the athletes for their skill, determination, and dedication. Modi acknowledged the country's fourth-place finish in the medals table, noting that India had won fewer medals compared to the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games but had a stronger medal conversion rate.

India's performance was highlighted by a standout boxing performance, with 7 gold medals and several silvers. The preparations for the 2026 Games focused on refurbishing existing infrastructure to enhance accessibility and sustainability, particularly for para-athletes. India fielded a smaller contingent of 122 athletes, but still managed to secure 38 medals, surpassing their previous best.

Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian athlete to win two medals. The handover ceremony for the 2026 Commonwealth Games from Scotland to India took place, with Neeraj Chopra, PT Usha, and Harsh Sanghavi representing India. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi stated that Ahmedabad, which will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, will focus on making the Games inclusive for para athletes and will set new benchmarks in accessibility and sustainability.
