PPP speeds up disciplinary process for 3 lawmakers amid internal feud

The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) has accelerated its disciplinary proceedings against three lawmakers amid internal disagreements. The ethics committee, recently re-established after several resignations, plans to convene this week to examine potential sanctions for the lawmakers. The panel aims to interview the individuals as early as mid-August, before determining whether any disciplinary actions are warranted.

Among those under scrutiny is Rep. Cho Kyoung-tae, a six-term member, who faces accusations of contacting lawmakers from other parties to obstruct Rep. Park Duk-hyum's election as deputy National Assembly speaker. First-term Rep. Jin Jong-oh is being examined for supporting an independent candidate in the Busan local elections, which the PPP had its own candidate registered for.

Lastly, Rep. Kwon Young-jin is facing allegations of violence against PPP floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig during a dispute over committee assignments. The lawmakers have voiced concerns regarding the committee's impartiality, with Rep. Cho filing a complaint against party leader Jang Dong-hyeok, alleging his dismissal from the party and questioning his expenditure of 200 million won during a U.S. visit. The PPP has countered these claims, stating the trip was necessary and minimal in cost.
