Philippines' Eala wins first WTA title, Fritz claims Washington crown

Alexandra Eala achieved a historic milestone by winning the first WTA title of her career, securing the Washington Open final on Monday (August 3) in a rain-delayed match. The 21-year-old Filipino overcame top seed Jessica Pegula, the world number three, with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Eala's victory propelled her to a career-high global ranking of 20 in the upcoming WTA rankings.

Taylor Fritz claimed the men's crown by defeating Spanish teenager Rafa Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 in a tightly contested final. Neither Fritz nor Jodar dropped a serve in the opening set. The American's dominant performance in the tiebreak and holding of serve in the second set ultimately led to his triumph.

Eala expressed her gratitude for the win, stating, "I feel so much love. My first chance at a title knowing it won't be the last and already having achieved this milestone for my career." Pegula, who had previously won the Washington Open in 2019 and 2021, congratulated Eala on her achievement, acknowledging the significant progress she has made in her career.
