Osun poll: Adeleke’s camp seeks IG’s assurance on peaceful election

The Imole Campaign Council, representing Governor Ademola Adeleke, has reached out to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to ensure a peaceful and violence-free gubernatorial election in Osun State on August 15, 2026. Spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi urged the police leadership to maintain neutrality among security personnel before, during, and after the poll.

The council emphasized that IGP should publicly assure the population of officers' professional and fair conduct during the election. Concern was expressed over the reinstatement of former Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan, citing questions about the neutrality of the police command under his tenure. The council demanded that security agencies not be used as tools for intimidation against any political group during the election.

They also called for an end to the practice of using arrests and detention to harass political opponents, stressing that credible elections necessitate impartial security agencies. Attempts to reach the Force spokesman, Anietie Iniedu, have not been successful as of now. This appeal for a peaceful election comes less than two weeks before the gubernatorial poll, for which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has concluded preparations.
