New Spider-Man film sees second-biggest ever global opening weekend

The upcoming Spider-Man film, Brand New Day, has shattered records with its impressive global opening weekend, grossing $927m (£687m) in ticket sales. This marks it as the second-highest earning opening weekend ever, trailing only behind Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The superhero film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya as a real-life couple, surpassed its estimated $225m production budget.

Brand New Day also set a strong North American record, earning $335m in its first week. This successful debut provides a much-needed boost for Disney as they look ahead to the highly anticipated release of Avengers: Doomsday in December. The movie picks up the story a few years after 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter Parker continuing his crime-fighting duties in a world that has seemingly forgotten his masked identity.

Critics have praised Brand New Day, with some hailing it as Tom Holland's best Spider-Man performance yet. Following Avengers: Endgame, Marvel films have struggled to match their earlier success at the box office, with recent releases like The Marvels and The Thunderbolts failing to attract broad audiences. Despite this, Spider-Man remains one of Marvel's most profitable franchises, with No Way Home alone raking in nearly $2bn in ticket sales.

The resurgence of cinema attendance this year, buoyed by blockbuster hits such as Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, has seen the North American box office on track to surpass $10bn for the first time since 2019. Upcoming releases, including Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of The Odyssey, are also on track to break the $1bn mark at the box office.

Even indie horror films like Obsession and Backrooms have proven successful, bringing in over $390m each, despite their modest budgets.
