Myanmar says Aung San Suu Kyi met Red Cross representative in Naypyitaw

Myanmar's detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi held a meeting with a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the country's capital, Naypyitaw, according to government spokeswoman Khine Khine Soe. The spokeswoman confirmed the encounter occurred in the capital but did not provide specifics about the conversation.

The meeting follows heightened worries about the health of the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, who has been under detention since the military coup in February 2021, which plunged Myanmar into political instability and armed conflict. The announcement precedes Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing's upcoming visit to Bangkok on August 6-7.

Suu Kyi, who previously governed Myanmar in a civilian capacity before the coup, has remained in custody while serving multiple prison sentences handed down by courts controlled by the military. Her supporters and human rights organizations have expressed concerns regarding her health and the conditions of her detention.
