Morocco blames Ceuta migrant rush on misinformation and human trafficking networks

Morocco's Interior Ministry has blamed misinformation, human trafficking networks, and a misinterpretation of a Spanish ruling for the recent surge of migrants attempting to cross into Ceuta and Melilla. The ministry reported that around 40,000 people were involved in the mass crossing, with 1,135 individuals stopped from entering Melilla.

Eleven people died during the crossings, mostly drowning. The ministry stated that the short distance between Spanish and Moroccan shores, less than 70 meters, created a false sense of ease, encouraging many to attempt the crossing. The Moroccan figures were lower than those reported by Spain, which claimed over 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta.

Spanish officials said the death toll was 72, and pledged to return every undocumented person to Morocco. The Spanish government has been working to ensure undocumented migrants are swiftly returned, and 1,000 people have been treated by health services in Ceuta. The situation has improved, but more efforts are needed to restore normality.

The incident has raised concerns among EU neighbors, with Italy suspending Schengen travel with Spain and EU interior ministers holding an emergency meeting. Spain has been open to migrants, offering residency to undocumented individuals, but rejects suggestions that its program encouraged the influx into Ceuta.
