Months after completion, Rivers lawmakers shun new Assembly complex

Nine months after the completion of the new Rivers State House of Assembly complex, lawmakers continue to hold sessions in their residential quarters along Aba Road. Governor Siminalayi Fubara had announced in November 2025 that the facility, equipped with modern amenities and security systems, would be ready for use by December 2025.

Despite the governor's optimism, the House of Assembly has not relocated to the new complex since the political crisis was resolved. The resolution comes after 17 members defected to the All Progressives Congress, and the current Speaker stated that the location of the Assembly is crucial for coordination and governance. However, stakeholders have urged lawmakers to relocate to the new complex, citing its improved facilities and the need for legislative continuity.

The South-South Youths Initiative and the Civil Liberties Organisation have also called for the lawmakers to return to the main chambers for effective governance.
