MLS appoints LAFC co-owner Berg as next commissioner

Major League Soccer announced on Monday that LAFC co-owner Larry Berg will become the league's next commissioner, succeeding longtime leader Don Garber as of January 1, 2027. Garber, who has served as commissioner since 1999, will remain in the role until the end of 2026 before becoming chairman. The 30-team league selected Berg following a succession process led by a committee of club owners.

Berg, who is selling his ownership interest in LAFC to avoid conflicts of interest, expressed excitement about leading MLS into its next era. In addition to his role with LAFC, Berg also serves as co-chair of MLS's Sporting and Competition Committee, having played a crucial role in the club's success, including winning the MLS Cup in 2022 and Supporters' Shield titles in 2019 and 2022.

Berg's appointment comes as MLS prepares for a significant period following the World Cup in North America, with plans to introduce a new competition calendar, address player squad rules, future media rights, and negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. Berg's extensive experience, including ownership interests in Italian and Welsh clubs, as well as his private equity background, make him a well-suited leader for MLS's future.
