Michigan’s GOP governor primary is getting weird

Michigan's Republican Party is witnessing an increasingly contentious primary race, marked by online brawls and personal attacks as it approaches the crucial primary election on Tuesday. Rep. John James, a West Point graduate with widespread name recognition and Trump's endorsement, appears to be the frontrunner for the nomination. However, he faces stiff opposition from Perry Johnson, an outspoken grassroots candidate who has launched scathing and personal attacks against James.

Johnson, once a presidential hopeful, is known for his quixotic 2024 presidential bid and a failed 2022 gubernatorial campaign. His campaign has been marred by complaints about his lack of visits to specific parts of the state and missing debates early in the race. Nevertheless, Johnson's supporters insist that Republican voters will rally behind the eventual nominee.

James has led the field since entering the race, but he is facing criticism over his voting record, missing debates, and giving away a crucial House seat to run for a new job. Despite his detractors, James' supporters predict that Republican voters will unite behind him. The intra-party strife comes at a pivotal moment for Michigan Republicans, who have been dissatisfied with eight years of Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer's leadership.

On the Democratic side, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who has built a substantial war chest, is set to face Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson for the nomination. President Trump's strong showing in 2024 is not guaranteed for Republicans, who suffered a setback with their Senate candidate. The party is now facing challenges in finding a nominee to appeal to independents and compete in a swing state riddled with rising gas prices and a deeply unpopular war in Iran.
