Meta CEO Zuckerberg must apologise: Parliamentary Panel

A parliamentary committee in India has rejected Meta's apology for removing a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding a personal apology from Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg and warning of potential removal of its safe harbor protection. The committee's chairperson, Nishikant Dubey, stated that the removal of the PM's video was either a serious system failure or a deliberate attempt to tarnish the PM's image on the part of Meta.

He emphasized that this failure could not be dismissed as a technical error and that an apology must come from Zuckerberg. The committee also questioned social media platforms on their use of algorithms and the presence of unlawful content, including child sexual abuse material, deepfake investment scams, and targeting of women.

The committee was unanimous in calling for stricter and timely measures against violating content, especially involving CSAM, cyber frauds, and harassment of women.
