MCA, MIC benefit when Umno is strong, says analyst

Pursuing votes in Negeri Sembilan's elections, MCA and MIC's fortunes appear linked to Umno's strength, according to analyst Azmi Hassan. Following MCA's victory in two seats, Hassan highlighted the party's commendable performance in Chennah and Repah. Siow Kong Choon's win in Chennah, marked by a 688-vote margin, demonstrated MCA's ability to secure "giant-killer" results.

This success was attributed to Malay voters supporting BN, a trend likely to benefit MCA and MIC should Umno and BN remain robust. MIC, however, faced setbacks in Seremban Jaya and Sri Tanjung, as these areas are considered DAP strongholds. Despite this, MIC's performance was less expected, as it failed to win both constituencies, unlike MCA's achievements.

Analyst Syaza Shukri cautioned against interpreting MCA's success as a broader revival for the party, suggesting it merely showcased their capability to attract votes in mixed constituencies. She also noted that MIC's strategy, focusing on Indian voters, proved less compelling compared to MCA's anti-DAP narrative. Moving forward, MCA should emphasize policies and constituency work, while MIC should reassess its Indian voter base and field more competitive candidates.
