(LEAD) Record heat wave continues to grapple S. Korea

South Korea is grappling with an unprecedented heat wave that shows no signs of abating. Scorching temperatures have plagued many regions, leading to numerous reports of heat-related illnesses. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) recorded a record high of 40.9°C in Daegu, breaking the 40°C barrier for the first time since August 1, 1942.

Goryeong County, located about 230 kilometers southeast of Seoul, reported the highest temperature of the day at 41.2°C. Severe heat warnings remain in effect across southwestern parts of the country, with temperatures reaching or exceeding 38°C perceived temperature for over a day triggering the warning. Additional severe heat warnings will take effect on Tuesday in southern Seoul, parts of Gyeonggi Province, as well as Jangseong and Gokseong counties in South Jeolla Province, marking the first time the highest-level heat warning has been issued in the greater Seoul area since the system's inception in June.

Yangsan, a southeastern city, experienced the highest recorded temperature of 42.5°C on Sunday since weather observations began in 1904, with temperatures peaking at 38°C. The extreme heat has resulted in health emergencies across the nation. In Incheon, west of Seoul, a 40-year-old man died on Monday morning with his body temperature nearing 40°C after being hospitalized the previous day.

Two farmers, aged 60 and 80, respectively, passed away in South Chungcheong Province on Sunday. The KMA attributes the prolonged high temperatures to a combination of overlapping high-pressure systems over the peninsula and strong, direct sunlight under clear skies.
