(LEAD) Investigation launched over death of Marine noncommissioned officer in Pohang

Military authorities and police have launched an investigation into the death of a Marine noncommissioned officer in Pohang, South Korea, on August 3. The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was discovered dead from what appears to be a gunshot wound at an off-base housing unit for Marine Corps officers in the southeastern city, located 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to officials.

The officer is believed to have held the rank of sergeant first class. A Marine Corps official stated that they went to the accommodation unit to search for the missing officer, as he did not report for duty and could not be reached by phone. No evidence of foul play was found at the scene.

However, the origin of the firearm and live ammunition, which were found at the location, remains unclear. The military authorities and police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the officer's death and the source of the weapon.
