Last Sentinel developer Lightspeed LA conducts layoffs, 80 roles reportedly cut

Tencent-owned Lightspeed LA has initiated layoffs, with 80 positions reportedly eliminated as the studio transitions its focus for its first title, Last Sentinel. According to Bloomberg, the cuts are a result of the company's decision to "shift the creative and development direction" of the game. Despite these changes, the developer has assured that they remain committed and active in game production.

In a statement provided to Bloomberg, Lightspeed LA explained that the restructuring would affect certain roles within the studio. However, they emphasized their compassionate approach towards the impacted team members, offering extensive support and the possibility of internal transfers. The company also reiterated their dedication to North America, stating that it will continue to invest in local talent and development in the region.

Lightspeed LA, headquartered in Irvine, California, was established in 2020 under the guidance of seasoned industry professional Steve Martin. The studio is a US-based division of Shenzhen's Lightspeed Studios. Last Sentinel was unveiled at The Game Awards in 2023, with reports indicating it has been under production for six years. Bloomberg sources suggested that the studio was "delayed several times" and had a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Tencent allegedly decided not to proceed with the project, leading to the layoffs. However, Lightspeed LA responded to IGN, stating that they would provide updates on the game's development "when ready." They also clarified that they had not announced a release date for the game at this time.
