Include Velama community in OBC list, Corporation Chairman asks Centre

Title: Velama Community Seeks OBC Status for Reservation Benefits

Andhra Pradesh Koppula Velama Corporation Chairman P.V.G. Kumar recently implored the Union government to recognize the Velama community as Other Backward Classes (OBC) to facilitate reservation opportunities for its youth in Central government jobs and prestigious national educational institutions. Accompanied by Corporation directors Earle Sriramamurthy, Midatana Ravikumar, Rongala Mahesh and others, Kumar plans to meet S. Savitha, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, in Amaravati on Tuesday to request the State government to submit a comprehensive report on the socio-economic conditions of the Velama community to the Union government.

Speaking to the media, Kumar expressed concern over the dearth of reservation under the OBC category for students belonging to the Velama community, who are currently unable to secure admissions in esteemed institutions such as medical colleges, Indian Institutes of Technology and other top-ranking educational establishments. He emphasized that granting OBC status to the Velama community would significantly benefit thousands of young individuals, thereby uplifting their prospects in various competitive examinations.

The Velama community, predominantly residing in the Koppula Mandal in Andhra Pradesh, has been persistently advocating for their inclusion in the OBC list for several years. With Kumar's persistent efforts and the support of the Corporation's directors, the Velama community's plight is expected to garner attention from the State and Union governments, potentially leading to a positive outcome for the community.
