Fifa president Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure to resign as national associations, including those from England and Wales, pull their support for his re-election bid. Should he decide to step down, several potential candidates could step up to take his place. Montagliani, the president of Concacaf, is one of the frontrunners.

The former president of Canada Soccer is fluent in multiple languages and campaigned on a platform of governance reform. He was heavily involved in the delivery of the 2026 World Cup, the first to be hosted by three nations. Montagliani has also taken the lead in smoothing relations around former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's attempt to gain support for a World Cup every two years.

Another possible candidate is the AFC president, Al Khalifa. He was initially elected in 2013 and returned unopposed for a fourth term until 2027. Under his tenure, the Asian confederation has seen significant growth, including the expansion of the Champions League and the launch of the Asian Cup with 24 teams. The European Clubs Association's president, Paris St-Germain's Al-Khelaifi, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate.

However, he has expressed that he doesn't want the role. The next Fifa president will be confirmed at the organization's 77th Congress in Morocco in March, with candidates having until November to put their names forward.
